Die Eric-Voegelin-Gesellschaft versteht es als ihre zentrale Aufgabe, die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit dem Werk des deutschen Philosophen Eric Voegelin zu fördern und dessen Denken einer größeren Leserschaft in Deutschland zugänglich zu machen. Die Gesellschaft ist aus dem Eric-Voegelin-Archiv e.V. hervorgegangen, der unter der Leitung von Prof. Dr. Peter J. Opitz über zwei Jahrzehnte sehr erfolgreich eben diese Ziele verfolgte. Auch dieses Treffen ist ein fester Bestandteil davon, zu dem wir Sie herzlich einladen.   

V souvislosti s blížícím se výročním narození Miloslava Petruska (1936-2012) a také v reakci na aktuální události týkající se agrese Ruska na Ukrajině připomeneme text, který napsal v roce 2009. Uvádí, že nemá žádné analytické ambice, ale chce spíše otevřít téma, o než bychom se měli zajímat, chceme-li porozumět dnešnímu Rusku. Autor je sice poněkud skeptický k weberiánské nehodnotící sociologii i k popperiánsky kategorickému odmítání sociologie vědění, nicméně jistá míra emocionální distance vůči tématu je jistě možná, ba přímo nutná. Studie měla být elementárním uvedením do tématu, na něž se stále zapomínalo, ačkoliv jsme měli celou řadu klasiků, kteří Rusku dobře rozuměl. Za všechny snad jenom T.G. Masaryka a jeho třísvazkové dílo Rusko a Evropa.

This study shows how the problem of the will became problematical for Heidegger in his mature being-historical thinking. Heidegger slowly gave up the voluntary approach to being. Through turning being-historical thinking he proceeded to the genuine non-willing. This began to open up a distance from the world of willful science-technicality toward a greater openness to being. This is needed to find genuine there-being and to approach originary beyng. Only then can the non-voluntaristic sense of the enowning of being open up, where modern subjectivity is transcended and with it also the period of technological nihilism; instead one goes on a journey to „thinking and poetizing,“ on the path of releasment and non-willing. Only thus can the zone of proper life be opened, wherein man is not ground down by mechanistic technical enframing and the mechanically subjectivistic will to power and will to will.

Roger Scruton also contributed an article to the book The Symbolic Order: A Contemporary Reader On The Arts Debate (1989). He has written on the aesthetics of modern philosophy. Its irruption into the terrain of philosophy is one of the most remarkable episodes in the history of ideas. Art, and the study of art, form the highest point to which man’s self-understanding may attain, before emancipating itself from the sensuous, and passing over into the sphere of abstract concepts, philosophical reflection, and natural science.  

Přestože tyranských režimů a diktatur ve světě ubývá, zůstalo v demokratických zemích myšlenkové podhoubí podporující moderní totalitarismus, který má k dispozici daleko více možností k ovládání a ohlupování mas. Polemická kniha Rogera Scrutona s názvem Fools, Frauds, and Firebrands: Thinkers of the New Left (Pošetilci, šarlatáni a buřiči) zdá se, opět ťala do živého.

Jedno z hlavních témat portálu Fenomén totalitarismus jsme rozšířili o osobnosti české katolické emigrace. Mikuláš Lobkowicz splňoval hned několik zjevných atributů odchodu do exilu. Pocházel z významné šlechtické rodiny, jeho otec byl diplomat a on sám se věnoval jakožto filosof kromě jiného i marxismu-leninismu. V devadesátých letech proslovil na půdě Univerzity Karlovy několik přednášek. Zamyslel se též nad tím, v čem stále spočívá přitažlivost státních a stranických ideologií. Článek vychází k výročí jeho nedožitých 90. narozenin.

Jedním z hlavních ideových východisek integračního úsilí, které dalo vzniknout Evropské unii i Organizaci spojených národů, byl spis Immanuela Kanta K věčnému míru. Kant byl dokonce nazván filosofickým králem Evropské unie. Nebude proto nezajímavé provést srovnání původních myšlenek s tím, co obhájci tehdejší podoby evropské integrace vydávali za naplnění. Dostane se Evropanům „věčného míru“, nebo dojde na často vzpomínanou ironickou poznámku na vývěsnímu štítu holandského hostince, na němž byl namalován hřbitov a nápis Evropanům se dostane věčného míru na hřbitově...

Jak došlo k tomu, že doba hlásající osvícenost a pokrokovost se proměnila v horor nejrůznějších politických režimů, ptá se ve své knize Kritika totalitarismu Rio Preisner a varuje před postupným rozvracením parlamentních demokratických systémů a následným vznikem tyranských režimů a diktatur. Novým rizikem je podle jeho slov i takzvaně moderní „vědecký“ totalitarismus, který má k dispozici mnohem sofistikovanější nástroje k ovládání mas, upevnění moci a „sebezbožnění člověka.“
