Text vychází z Voegelinových pozdních prací psaných v letech 1960 až 1977, kdy se hlouběji zabýval individuální zkušeností transcendence a její symbolizací. Úvahy byly publikovány v uceleném souboru v roce 1990 na The University of Missouri, Columbia, v českém jazyce vyšly v nakladatelství Centrum pro studium demokracie a kultury (CDK) v Brně.

V roce 2015 vydalo nakladatelství CDK v Brně výbor Voegelinových textů ze šedesátých a sedmdesátých let, do jehož názvu byl převzat podtitul jedné ze studií, které jsou v něm zahrnuty: Zkušenost a symbol.[1] Záměrem výboru je přiblížit jednu zřejmě méně známou, avšak podstatnou vrstvu Voegelinovy filosofie.

Po prvý krát bola publikovaná vo Voegelin Research News 2, no. 3 (september 1996) a je taktiež súčasťou vydaného súborného Voegelinovho diela „The Collected Works of Eric Voegelin, vol. 33, The Drama of Humanity and other Miscellaneous Papers 1939–1985“, pod názvom „Structures in Consciousness“.
