Mit Gründung des Voegelin Archivs am Geschwister Scholl Institut hat Prof. Peter Opitz die Reihe Occasional Papers (später: Voegeliniana) aufgelegt, in der kleinere Arbeiten von und über Eric Voegelin sowie andere philosophische und politiktheoretische Texte veröffentlicht werden. Dieser Beitrag ist entnommen und Veröffentlicht mit der Genehmigung für das Voegelin Principles von Eric Voegelin Gesellschaft und Peter J. Opitz. 

This article of the volume, Political Rhetoric and Leadership in Democracy, is the result of an interdisciplinary symposium on Democracy and Rhetoric at Southern Utah University on January 2010. Professor of Political Science at Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan Lee Trepanier and his publisher has given Voegelin Principles to reprint his chapter. 

Text vychází z knihy The New Science of Politics, která patří mezi stěžejní Voegelinova díla. Vybíráme z ní polemiku s Maxem Weberem o takzvané bezhodnotové vědě, jež dále odkrývá Voegelinův negativní postoj k pozitivismu. V českém jazyce vyšla kniha v nakladatelství Centrum pro studium demokracie a kultury v Brně, s jejímž svolením se úryvek objevuje na portálu Voegelin Principles, který je partnerem Voegelin Society.   

Skotský filosof a ekonom Adam Smith (1723-1790), jakožto zakladatel moderní ekonomie, je asi nejčastěji spojován s knihou Bohatství národů, která je současnými liberálními ekonomy různě vykládána. Mezi nejméně diskutované statě patří Teorie mravních citů (The Theory of Moral Sentiments), která by měla být chápána jakožto důležitý doplněk ke slavné knize. Obě díla totiž tvoří nerozlučný celek a nejsou v žádném případě v protikladu, jak se někteří Smithovi vykladači mylně domnívají.

Přestože byla Voegelinova studie ovlivněna válečnými hrůzami, má zcela jistě co říci i k dnešku (zvláště v kombinaci typů). K překladu do češtiny ji zapůjčil Eric Voegelin Archiv, Ludwig Maxmilians Universität München. Irský filosof a teolog George Berkeley je znám především svým idealismem a popřením možnosti hmotné substance. Neméně významné je však jeho chápání mysli člověka jako bytostně aktivního jsoucna a jeho teorie sebeuvědomění. Český filosof britského původu James Hill předložil ve své knize originální pohled na Berkeleyho filosofii ducha. Se svolením nakladatele uvádíme ukázku z knihy, kde autor představuje poznání anglického filosofa Thomase Hobbese v Berkeleyho interpretaci.     

Text vychází z knihy Vzpomínky na život a filosofii, kde vykládá Eric Voegelin své rozsáhlé dílo vytvořené do roku 1973, kdy byly vzpomínky nadiktovány a přepsány v rozhovoru s profesorem Ellisem Sandozem. Kniha bývá označována za nejlepší možný úvod do Voegelinova myšlení. V českém jazyce vyšla kniha v nakladatelství Centrum pro studium demokracie a kultury v Brně, s jejímž svolením se úryvek objevuje na portálu Voegelin Principles, který je partnerem Voegelin Society.     

Emeritierter Professor für Politische Wissenschaften am Geschwister-Scholl-Institut der Universität München Peter J. Opitz ist Herausgeber zahlreicher Werke von und über Eric Voegelin. The study is concerned with the specific nature of two velvet revolutions in Czech history – in 1918 and 1989 – and with the philosophy of the two men who blead them – Thomas Garrigue Masaryk and Vaclav Havel. Professor of Political Science at Louisiana State University, former Director of the Eric Voegelin Institute for American Renaissance Studies, and founder of the Eric Voegelin Society Ellis Sandoz after the „Velvet Revolution“ of 1989 has addressed the Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia and conducted lectures and a series of conferences on The Federalist Papers, and other aspects of the Anglo-American constitutionalism and liberty and Western political philosophy, for academic and political leaders in Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland.
